The benefits of a Sitz Bath to promote Perineum healing after birth

Have you ever heard of a Sitz Bath?

It's all about soaking your perineum in warm water, starting anywhere from 24 to 48 hours after giving birth and continuing through the postpartum period, about 1 to 3 times daily. This helps heal any perineal tears. If your perineum is swollen in the first 24 hours, it's a good idea to apply ice to reduce the swelling. Once the swelling goes down, you can switch to warm water soaks.

You can toss in some Epsom salt and a bunch of herbs known for their healing and soothing effects, like:

๐ŸŒธ Arnica Flowers: Known for their anti-inflammatory properties, arnica can help reduce swelling and pain in the perineal area.

๐ŸŒธ Calendula Flowers: Calendula is famous for its wound-healing abilities. It can help in the healing of tears and reduce inflammation.

๐ŸŒธ Chamomile Flowers: Chamomile has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for reducing swelling and discomfort.

๐ŸŒธ Comfrey Leaf: Comfrey is known for its healing properties. It contains allantoin, which helps in the regeneration of skin cells, aiding in the healing of tears.

๐ŸŒธ Eucalyptus Leaf: Eucalyptus has antiseptic properties, which can help prevent infection in the perineal area.

๐ŸŒธ Ground Ginger Root: Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which can help alleviate pain and reduce swelling.

๐ŸŒธ Juniper Berries: Juniper has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, helpful in reducing discomfort and preventing infection.

๐ŸŒธ Lavender: Lavender is known for its calming and soothing effects. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can aid in healing and pain relief.

๐ŸŒธ Mints: Mint, particularly peppermint, can provide a cooling effect, which may help soothe the perineal area and reduce discomfort.

๐ŸŒธ Ground Mustard: Mustard has warming and stimulating properties, which can help increase blood flow to the perineal area, aiding in healing.

๐ŸŒธ Rosemary Leaf: Rosemary has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It can promote healing and help prevent infection.

๐ŸŒธ Sage Leaf: Sage possesses anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it beneficial in reducing swelling and preventing infection.

๐ŸŒธ St. Johnโ€™s Wort: Known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, St. John's Wort can help in pain relief and reduce inflammation.

๐ŸŒธ Turmeric Root: Turmeric is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties and can aid in reducing swelling and promoting healing.

These herbs can be used individually or in combination in a sitz bath to promote healing, reduce swelling, pain, and the risk of infection in the perineal area after childbirth. These herbs can even be found pre-mixed in handy tea bags that you just drop into your bath.

In practice, you have two options for a Sitz bath:

  • you can either use a specialized Sitz bath basin that fits over your toilet, allowing your perineum to soak,

  • or you can sit in your bathtub filled with about 20 cm of water and add the herbs directly to it.

Be careful though, It's important not to take a full bath as your cervix remains open for approximately four weeks after childbirth. There's a risk of infection if germs from the bath water enter your uterus. Both the basin and the bath filled with 20 cm of water are perfectly safe options.

Besides the herbal benefits, the warmth on your perineum boosts blood flow and oxygen to the tissue, speeding up the healing process.

Give it a try โ€“ it's a real game-changer!"
